Was ist ein Tool?
Als Tool gelten Verfahren, Leitfäden, Methoden, Evaluierungen oder Bewertungen zur Erreichung eines Zieles oder eines Ergebnisses.
Im Rahmen des PETUS Forschungsprogramms werden Tools vorgestellt, die bei der nachhaltigen Planung urbaner Infrastrukturen behilflich sein können.

Wie können Ihnen Tools helfen?
Tools können dabei helfen, Nachhaltigkeitsaspekte in die Planung urbaner Infrastrukturen auf eine methodische und organisierte Art und Weise mit einzubeziehen. Mit Hilfe von Tools können die Beteiligten die Bedeutung von Nachhaltigkeit in einem bestimmten Projekt erkennen und den Maßnahmen zustimmen. Tools ermöglichen im Laufe der Zeit und in Organisationen selbst und zwischen ihnen einen einheitlichen Zugang zu Themen der Nachhaltigkeit.
Welche Charakteristika bestimmen die Tools?
Oft ist es schwierig zu bestimmen, welches Tool das geeignetste für die praktische Anwendung wäre. Aus diesem Grund werden viele Tools nicht so oft verwendet wie es möglich wäre. Oft werden Tools abgelehnt, aus Angst, ihre vollständige Anwendung würde zu lange dauern oder sie könnten nicht „ die richtigen Tools“ sein.
Das PETUS Team hat während ihrer Forschungsarbeiten zahlreiche in der Praxis verwendete Tools bestimmt. Um Ihnen die Wahl eines Tools oder einer Toolgruppe, die Ihnen bei Ihrem Projekt helfen könnte, zu erleichtern, hat das PETUS Team die Tools in verschiedene Typen unterteilt. Jeder Typus wird kurz beschrieben, das Projektstadium, in dem das Tool verwendet wird, die Art der Ergebnisse bei der Anwendung des Tools und einige Kommentare zu Erfahrungen zu den Tools.

Welche Tools kommen in PETUS vor?
Die in PETUS bestimmten und beschriebenen Tools stammen aus zwei Hauptquellen:
1)Tools, die in den Fallstudien verwendet wurden: für diese Tools wurden zum Verständnis eine Reihe von Informationen bereitgestellt, so wie eine Kurzfassung, die Tooleigenschaften, Informationen über die praktische Anwendung , Bezugsquelle des Tools und Bewertungen und Meinungen der Toolanwender.
2)Tools, die aus der Fachliteratur stammen- das PETUS Team hat eine ausführliche Durchsicht der Fachliteratur durchgeführt und dabei die Tools erarbeitet, die in Projekte über urbane Infrastrukturen eingearbeitet werden könnten. Da es keine Hinweise auf eine Anwendung dieser Tools in der Praxis gibt, sind sie zwar kurz beschrieben aber Kommentare über ihre Anwendung fehlen.
Rahmenwerke – Toolsammlungen
Im Zuge der Literaturdurchsicht wurde ebenfalls eine Reihe von Rahmenwerken bestimmt. Ein Rahmenwerk könnte als eine Informationssammlung gesehen werden, die dazu dient, Aktionen mit Bezug zu bestimmten Belangen wie soziale Auswirkungen eines Infrastrukturprojekts zu unterstützen.
Die ermittelten Rahmenwerke beschreiben, wie ein Projekt oder Verfahren mit Nachhaltigkeitsbezug zu managen ist, durch welche Phasen gegangen werden muss, wie die Beteiligten einzubeziehen sind, welche Tooltypen verwendet werden, wie die Situationsanalysen aussehen sollen etc. Abhängig vom Sektor und vom Standpunkt des Entwicklers werden verschiedene Benutzertypen angesprochen.
