Description of the tool
The tool is comprised of sixteen design features such as:
• The living room should be at entrance level,
• Living room window glazing should begin at 800mm or lower and windows should be easy to open/ operate,
• Walls in bathrooms and toilets should be capable of taking adaptations such as handrails.
The features are designed to ensure a new house or flat will meet the needs of most households. The incorporation of the features ensures that the focus is on accessibility and design features that make the home flexible enough to meet whatever comes along in life

According to the Joseph Rowntree Foundation: "The quality of housing demanded by buyers and tenants is always increasing - Lifetime Homes include a number of attractive features that will differentiate then from existing homes and offer a positive marketing edge."

Homes that meet all the standards are entitled to be designated "Lifetime Homes". They will also meet the Part M Building Regulations, parts of the Housing Corporation Scheme Development Standards, and the requirements of most local authorities for accessible housing.
