Tool summaryName of the tool CSD Framework Description of the tool The framework is the culmination of the CSD Work Programme on Indicators of Sustainable Development (1995-2000). It provides a detailed description of key sustainable development themes and sub-themes (final framework has 15 themes and 38 sub-themes) and the CSD approach to the development of indicators of sustainable development for use in decision-making processes at the national level. Within the four primary dimensions of sustainable development (social, economic, environmental, and institutional categories) as discussed in Agenda 21, indicators were classified according to driving force, state, and response characteristics; adopting a conceptual approach widely used for environmental indicator development.
