Tool summary

Name of the tool
EASEWASTE (Environmental Assessment of Solid Waste Systems and Technologies)

Description of the tool
The model, which is under development, is designed to compare the environmental impacts for different ways of treating household waste on an LCA-basis. The model calculates net energy production and a range of environmental impacts (global warming, acidification, eutrofication, ozone depletion, photo-chemical ozone formation and human and eco-toxicity) for different treatment alternatives (bio-gasification, incineration, composting, landfill deposit etc.) for municipal waste (household, industrial, institutional). This can be calculated for different compositions of waste. The LCA-calculations and the impact assessments are based on the Danish LCA-Database EDIP. Data (e.g. updates or for new technologies) can be added by user.

The model can be used to design waste management systems, to assess existing systems (e.g. by integrated green accounts) and for redesigning existing systems (e.g. moving fractions (for instance batteries) from one part of the system to another).

Focus for the first programme model version is municipal solid waste with emphasis on household waste. Later versions might include an economic module as well, allowing economic assessments.

Specific topic
Solid waste management systems, and the environmental consequences of different treatment methods (disposal, combustion, composting etc.).
