European Common Indicators

Description of the tool
The developed set of indicators is based on the six Sustainability Principles (equality and social inclusion, local governance/empowerment/democracy, local/global relationship, local economy, environmental protection, cultural heritage/quality of the built environment). To qualify into the set, an indicator had to address at least three of them (= integration requirement). Over 1,000 indicators were analysed both against this requirement and against a list of general criteria. By applying the set of indicators developed within the framework of the ECI project, the team created a sub-national geographical area ecological footprint tool (SGA Tool) for EU.
